Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation of injury is done to help the physically active and athletes recovery from injury and return to their pre-injury functioning and performance. Getting you back to your optimal performance is the goal of rehabilitation. After a sports injury, rehabilitation is done to treat pain and return the normal mobility and motion of the athlete prior to the injury. Injury rehabilitation may be aimed at addressing a range of conditions and injuries including strains, sprains, muscle, tendon and ligament repairs, tendonitis, acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries and post-surgery rehab.
While each rehabilitation approach is unique to the patient, it may involve targeted strengthening and flexibility exercises given by your physiotherapist to improve mobility restrictions and strengthen the injured area to prevent recurring injury episodes.
Rehabilitation of sports injury may include:
- Functional activities
- Sports/Activity-specific exercises and training
- Bracing and taping (athletic and kinesiotaping)
- Fabrication of protective pads
- Modalities
- Manual Therapy
- Muscle reconditioning
Depending on the nature of the injury or post-operative surgery- rehabiliation may require a multidisciplinary approach consisting of a sports physician, sport psychologist, biokineticists, orthotist and orthopaedic surgeon. The rehabilitation team that make up Tshwane Orthopaedic Sports and Rehabilitation Centre have vast experience in looking after major league sports teams and national teams in various sporting codes – of which some continue to do part-time.
