Foot and Elbow Surgery

At Tshwane Orthopaedic Sports and Rehabilitation Centre, our team of orthopaedic surgeons specializes in a range of surgeries for foot and elbow conditions where non-surgical treatments have been unsuccessful. Minimally invasive arthroscopic foot and elbow surgery may be necessary to address damaged joints, soft tissues, and ligaments, aiming to reduce pain and improve mobility. We prioritize conservative treatments whenever possible, including physical therapy and medication, but when surgery is necessary, we utilize the latest techniques such as arthroscopic surgery and open surgery to ensure the best outcomes. Our goal is to alleviate your pain, restore function, and help you return to your active lifestyle as quickly and safely as possible. Throughout your journey, our team is committed to providing compassionate care and support every step of the way.

Foot Orthopaedic Surgery:

  • Bunionectomy: Surgical removal of a bunion, a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe.
  • Hammer toe correction: Surgery to correct the deformity of a toe that is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer.
  • Plantar fascia release: Surgery to release tension in the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, often performed to treat plantar fasciitis.
  • Ankle arthroscopy: Minimally invasive surgery to diagnose and treat problems in the ankle joint, such as cartilage damage or loose bone fragments.
  • Achilles tendon repair: Surgical repair of a ruptured or torn Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.
  • Flatfoot reconstruction: Surgery to correct flatfoot deformity by restoring the arch of the foot.
  • Metatarsal osteotomy: Surgery to realign or shorten the metatarsal bones in the foot to treat conditions like metatarsalgia or Morton's neuroma.

Elbow Orthopaedic Surgery:

  • Tennis elbow release (Lateral epicondylitis release): Surgery to release the damaged tendon on the outside of the elbow, commonly performed to treat tennis elbow.
  • Golfer's elbow release (Medial epicondylitis release): Surgery to release the damaged tendon on the inside of the elbow, commonly performed to treat golfer's elbow.
  • Elbow arthroscopy: Minimally invasive surgery to diagnose and treat various elbow conditions, such as loose bodies, cartilage damage, or tennis elbow.
  • Ulnar nerve transposition: Surgery to move the ulnar nerve from behind the elbow to a new position in front of it, relieving pressure and reducing symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome.
  • Elbow fracture repair: Surgical realignment and fixation of fractured bones in the elbow, often using plates, screws, or wires.
  • Elbow ligament reconstruction (Tommy John surgery): Surgical reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in the elbow, commonly performed in athletes, especially baseball pitchers, to stabilize the joint.
  • Elbow joint replacement: Surgery to replace a damaged elbow joint with an artificial implant, typically performed in cases of severe arthritis or trauma.

These are just a few examples of the types of foot and elbow orthopaedic surgeries available. The specific procedure recommended will depend on the individual patient's diagnosis, symptoms, and overall health. It's important to consult with an orthopaedic surgeon to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your condition.
